My first roulette adventure

My wife loves to visit Crown Casino, Perth on her birthday and it is the highlight of her year. I would tag along for nothing more than a bit of company in the car. I’m not a gambler and have a particular and powerful hatred of slot machines because your chance of winning is incredibly remote. It took 10 years of casino birthday trips before I began my first roulette adventure.

During our previous visits I’d walk around drinking beer while watching peoples faces turn to despair as they lost their money, including my wife. I was the one disappointing her after five or six hours of losing money and saying “come on, we’ve been here all day,” followed by her saying “just another $100 and then we’ll go.” The only thing I looked forward to during casino trips was Teriyaki Chicken from 88 Noodle Bar. It used to have a small pile of special spices on the side of the bowl; deliciousness. But now they don’t and the dish is rubbish.

For no apparent reason I decided to sit down at an electronic roulette machine. I chose it because I didn’t know what I was doing and it gave me a chance to examine the game. It offers better odds, 1/37, rather than slots which are about 1 in 7,000,000.

First Roulette Bet

I fed a $50 note into the machine and put $2.50 on a third and $2.50 on another third. I won $7.50 giving me a profit of $2.50.

Similarly I put $2.50 on Red based on my belief it was a 50/50 chance – which is wrong because I didn’t account for 0. 0 bites me on the bum all the time.

Rather than sitting there for hours I’d play 20 minutes and then leave, walk around for a little and go back 20 minutes later. More people were clustered around the electronic machines now, so I sat down and continued with bets on thirds, horizontally and vertically.

It didn’t take long for me to double my money. Once I had $100 in the machine, remember I started with $50, I doubled my bet from a total of $5 to $10. A win would get me $30 so I’d be $10 ahead with each win.

Again I doubled my money, printed off my ticket showing $200 and showed it to my wife. She was pretty happy about it, particularly as she had lost over $500 playing $0.01 slot machines. Once again I walked around for 20 – 30 minutes, got myself another cold beer before returning to the machines.

Once again my luck held out. I lost a few times but continued playing and doubling my bet each time I doubled my money. Something my younger brother told me years ago was “winning big means betting big!”

$100 Bets now – My roulette adventure continues

It wasn’t long before my bets were $100. Something I would never have dreamt of previously and would have scolded my wife if she ever considered placing $100 bets per game on slots.

Yet here I am betting $100 and contemplating $200 wagers. With each win I was another $100 up, but with every win there is an enevatable loss and losing $200 hurts.

I kept reassuring myself I started with $50 and can comfortably afford to lose it. I’ve now got a $1,000 in the bank and for the first time am enjoying the casino.

After reaching $1,600 I decided to be a devil and placed an $800 bet and guess what – I lost. I said earlier losing $200 but it pales into insignificance when you lose $800. Promptly reducing my bets down to $10 again I clawed my way back and left with $1,200.

Suffice to say I have never made another $800 wager since nor will I again. My average wager these days is $30 – $50.

That was my first spin of the roulette wheel.
