Do you have a lucky number and why?

Why do people think a number is lucky for them? We’ve all heard others talk about their lucky numbers, those magical digits which seemly hold special significance in their lives, and which can mysteriously influence the outcome of events when invoked. Today, I’ll be exploring the idea of lucky numbers, the reasons behind their allure, and sharing my own lucky numbers – 7, 27, 11, and 30. So, let’s dive in! Leave a comment and tell me “Do you have a lucky number and why?”

What Are Lucky Numbers?

People believe lucky numbers possess certain qualities or energies which bring them good fortune, success, and positive outcomes to those who associate with them. These numbers often hold cultural or personal significance and are considered auspicious in various traditions worldwide. For example, 88 in Chinese cultures is considered very lucky and prices for supermarket items, in China, often contain an 8 for that reason.

Number 88 symbolizes fortune and good luck in Chinese culture, since the word 8 sounds similar to the word fā (發, which implies 發財, or wealth, in Mandarin or Cantonese). The number 8 is considered to be the luckiest number in Chinese culture, and prices in Chinese supermarkets often contain many 8s.

The Fascination Behind Lucky Numbers

While there is no scientific evidence suggesting lucky numbers play a role in outcomes, the allure of lucky numbers continue to play a role in gambling, lotteries, and more. Some people even see patterns of numbers everywhere they look. Walking down the street and you might see house number 7, then look away, and the next time you look up you see number 27. Throughout the day you continue to see the number 7 but is the universe sending you a message? Probably not! Your brain is subconsciously building an association for no particular reason even though there is no real meaning to it.

My sister in-law once walked through a casino and was confronted with number 27 everywhere she went. My younger brother, her late husband, had played 27 Red for many years prior to his death and she saw it as a sign, She placed a $100 wager on 27 and it won. Does that mean 27 is special in some way? For her it was special because it was her husbands number. However, coincidence doesn’t make 27 any more likely to come up.

Whilst believing in lucky numbers is important to many of us, ultimately they are meaningless. As humans we look for patterns, even when we are not aware of it, and associate those patterns with predictive ability and use them playing number-games, especially if we have cash riding on it.

We even use numbers to define our chances of particular outcomes, we call them Odds. Roll 5 dice and the chance of all 5 showing as 6 is very slim, but it happens and has happened to me while playing Yahtzee. The odds of that happening are 1:7776, which in itself implies it can happen, it just doesn’t happen often.

Numbers are everywhere and assigning meaning to particular numbers is what we do. If a number was truly lucky, we’d win all the time. The fact we don’t always win should tell you all you need to know. Another thing to consider is that everyone playing roulette with you may also have a lucky number; what makes your number more lucky than theirs?

My Lucky Numbers and why

Now, let’s talk about my personal lucky numbers – 7, 27, 11, and 30. Each of these numbers are important to me for different reasons. They are related either directly to me or someone important to me.

The Number 7

Lucky number seven! This number has always been my go-to number.

My late father was an engineer in the military and way back in the 1970’s Australia purchased a bunch of helicopters. When the helicopters arrived they were packaged up in large boxes, and in pieces, requiring assembly IKEA style.

Lucky-Number-7

While everyone else went off to the pub for celebrations dad grabbed his team and said “let’s build one now!”. No doubt the lower ranks below him were pissed off, but dutifully stood to attention and said “Aye Sir”.

The first helicopter built was assigned number 07. When it wasn’t taking over the world with day to day military duties it was often used in ceremonial roles, such as carrying a huge flag during Australia’s Bicentennial Celebrations. It saw service all over the Australia and overseas and did everything from flood rescue to finding sneaky submarines within Australian waters. Given the chance it would have taken out the Death Star!

When the helicopters were retired 30 years later 07 was still in flying condition! In fact every helicopter dad built was still flying, while all others (not built by him) had since crashed.

07 is now in a museum where anyone can see her in all her glory and I still visit her from time to time.

That is why number 7 is my luckiest number.

The Number 27

27 holds a sentimental value for me. For the first 50 years of my life I didn’t gamble or play roulette, whereas my brother had always been a keen roulette player. He played all over the world and 27 was his go to number.

For many years he tried getting me to play roulette and always said “chuck a few bucks on 27 Red”. I never did, until a few years ago. 27 had won him loads of money over the years, in fact so much at one point they wouldn’t let him take it home because he was very drunk. They had to call his wife and she had to drag their toddler children out of bed at 2am and drive to the casino to pick him up and collect the cash. That huge win was 27.

To honour his memory, I regularly bet on 27.

In a fumble-finger 27 horror story recently, I was playing electronic roulette at Crown Casino in Perth and watching the croupier on stage spin the wheel. I picked up a $100 chip to put on 27 Red, but I didn’t have my glasses on, and my right-hand has an involuntary tremor; so my finger touched the screen a little to the left and I accidentally dropped my $100 bet on 24 Black which is right next to 27. Before I could rectify my screw-up they called no more bets. Guess what – 27 Red came up! I was so close to $3,500 win and curse myself for my shaking right hand and not putting my glasses on.

The Number 30 and 11

Number 30 and 11 are just as important to me as 7 and 27. They are numbers related to my wife who is the love of my life. While we have been together for nearly 30 years we’ve only been married since 2017. We were married in Las Vegas by an Elvis impersonator, which apparently was her childhood dream.

She is younger than I am so I consider her my trophy wife. I’ve always wanted a trophy. 🙂

Whenever possible I will put money on 30 and 11, even when using strategies I ensure those two numbers are in the mix. Numbers 30 and 11 will always be part of my roulette play.

Why Do We Believe in Lucky Numbers?

The belief in lucky numbers can be attributed to psychological factors, such as the human need for patterns and the desire to find meaning in random events. Additionally, cultural and historical influences play a significant role in shaping our perceptions of luck and superstitions surrounding numbers.

Conclusion

Lucky numbers may be a product of our imagination, but they undoubtedly have the power to influence our thoughts and actions. Whether you believe in them wholeheartedly or consider them mere coincidences, there’s no denying that lucky numbers add a bit of charm and excitement to our lives. As for my lucky numbers – 7, 27, 11, and 30 – they continue to be a source of hope and have thus far brought me luck. Lucky numbers remind us all to embrace life’s surprises and cherish the moments that make it truly awesome and remember those we have lost.
